The
Whitethroat ( Sylvia communis) visits Britain in the Spring
and Summer from thorn-scrub areas of the Sahel, south of the Sahara,
to breed. Their old country name is 'nettlecreeper', giving a clue
as to areas they like to inhabit. Perched on a branch, and calling
their rather raspy song is another familiar sight. Taken 13/06/2009 |

This beautiful
warbler, (Sedge Warbler - Acrocephalus schoenobaenus)
arrives back in Britain from its wintering grounds in West Africa,
in the Spring. It has a vast repertoir of varied notes and calls
in its song, often mimicking other birds.
To get this
shot, I crawled through mud and reeds, and have decided, my skills
using stealth need some serious attention! :). I think a future
visit to the same spot, equipped with a mat and tripod may be
more practical :) Handheld. Taken 05/05/2006

Totally
unplanned and dressed in a white tshirt and a pair of shorts, I
waited in long grass about 12 feet away from this birds perch. I
couldnt believe my luck when it returned and gave me these superb
views. Handheld shot. Taken using my Canon Eos 20D and Canon 400mm
f/5.6 lens. 17/06/2006 |

I
was amazed at just how busy these adult Reed Warbler were; I watched
for several hours as they caught Common Damselflies, various Hover
flies and aphids to feed to their young. Occasionally they stopped
off to take a drink. The shots I got following this image show the
bird scurrying off with a muddied globule of water in its beak;
Im presuming this was for the chicks.
