Starling - Sturnus vulgaris

I was out photographing Starlings recently, when a well-meaning passerby asked why I was photographing such a 'plain black bird'. Obviously in our busy lives, its possible we may see, but actually fail to 'see' just what is there! Starlings are a very stunning and very entertaining wild bird, with lots of endearing characteristics. Next time you see one, spare it some time and discover its beauty :)
Plumage in October

Not only are these birds entertaining characters, they throw up some nice surprises relating to smaller, more easily missed details. For example, breeding birds show a yellow bill; at its base the colour being either blue (male bird) or pink (female bird) In juveniles and non-breeding first winter birds the bill is generally all black.
